Features of podium makeup in the championship movement and mistakes to avoid

The Ukrainian masters of the ABC team once again proved that they are worthy of victory, having won prizes at the OMC Hairworld 2020 World Championship in the “Runway Makeup” category. Svetlana Pukalskaya took silver thanks to her creative work, and Lina Savchuk took fifth place.

We decided to chat with the girls and find out what secrets helped them achieve success, what details of runway makeup are currently relevant and how to properly prepare for such an event. We also asked for comments from coach Natalya Khadeeva, who prepared the masters for participation in the championship, in order to figure out how to achieve victory and what mistakes are important to avoid.

What inspired you to create the work for the CHI World Cup? Where did you get your inspiration from?

The World Championship was a dream for me! And so my dream became an inspiration and incentive to participate and create an image. My trainers Natasha Khadeeva and Taisiya Vasilyeva are a huge example and support for me - they were the ones who helped in creating the work.

Share your personal secrets and life hacks that help you get the job done efficiently and in accordance with the nomination.

The secret is that you need to train, draw a lot, hone your skills and knowledge after each training session. I couldn’t draw at all, even on paper, and preparing for the championship gave me the opportunity to see myself as an artist. During the preparation process, I even drew on my feet.

How long did it take you to prepare this image?

Preparation and creation of the image took a month and a half.

Are there any fundamental differences between podium makeup in life and in the championship movement?

Of course, in the championship movement, runway makeup has certain rules that you follow when creating an image. Everything should look harmonious, i.e. hairstyle, jewelry and dress should not outshine the makeup, but complement the entire image as a whole.

I believe that runway makeup can be natural or flashy, delicate or fatal, discreet or bright - it all depends on the idea of the collection and the vision of the stylist or designer.

Which features of runway makeup are currently relevant, and which may have become a thing of the past?

Various colored patterns on the face, large sparkles and sweeping smokey eyes are now very popular for runway makeup.

How to take a high-quality photo of your work to highlight its merits?

To ensure that the photo was of high quality and truly conveyed all the details and beauty of the makeup, we worked as a team with a photographer and a model. Only through teamwork and with the right lighting can truly high-quality photos be obtained.

In fact, it’s important to come to the process. And the image is put together puzzle by puzzle, step by step in the process of preparation and training. The whole team.

The diagram is not painted, the image is not created with just the touch of a hand. It's all robot. Monotonous, routine, tedious work and training. The lines, sharp and asymmetrical at first, become smooth, thin, and beautiful after further processing. The same with symmetry. All right!

How long did it take you to prepare this image?

This month's work has been completed. The schemes were highlighted both on the paper and on the model, and they were displayed on everyone who came across it. Selection and consideration of accessories, decorative elements, trimming and many small details and nuances that are formed in the process. As you can say for the world championship, I finally quit my job in order to fully prepare. I’m really glad that everything turned out this way and I made it to the top five makeup artists in the world in my nomination.

Are there any fundamental differences between podium makeup in life and in the championship movement?

So! Championship robots are more complex, more jewelry, more technical. Well, the championship is a clear quantum challenge for the master of technology, purity of work, symmetry.

Which features of runway makeup are currently relevant, and which may have become a thing of the past?

Runway makeup is less relevant among clients and also conveys creativity. As we talk about working with clients and models at the same shows and shootings, the schemes are similar both in technical terms and in color. The choice of folding color transitions is not even more popular among clients, but it perfectly shows your level of mastery.

As for me, the most competitive robots give me a technical base, for example, symmetry, work with lines and shadings are developed. “Hand placement” is greatly improved, not as much as in the basic course, but rather through self-awareness and understanding of processes.

How to take a high-quality photo of your work to highlight its merits?

Find a great photographer! I clearly state the task. Starting with the background, angle and ending with elements of Photoshop and technical processing. Bo at the championship you can select up to 30% of the cut, or even less.

In my opinion, to win any competition, you need to give 200%! Then you will have a chance that the judges will notice and highlight your work. All the girls’ work was completed at the highest level, because the Ukrainian national team has the most gorgeous coach - the incredibly talented and creative Vasilyeva Taisiya Grigorievna ! She helps you choose the form of makeup and create an image that is thought out to the smallest detail.

Natalya, tell us about the specifics of preparing for the online championship.

The main feature of online competitions is that your work is completely in the hands of the photographer. Your fate depends on the correct lighting, how much the color and graphic nuances of the work will be revealed, how the model poses and what emotional state it conveys; angles, glances, and turns of the head are also important.

What mistakes do participants often make?

The main mistakes in competition works are made if the participant tries to prepare independently, without taking into account the requirements and features of each nomination, and the requirements in regional and international competitions differ.

You may end up with a great piece of work that would definitely be a prize in another direction. Therefore, contact coaches and judges with questions to easily navigate your chosen topic. Remember that the model and image, thought out to the details, are of enormous importance.

What else should you pay attention to?

I'll say a few words about makeup composition. The selected pattern should contain large (accent), medium and small elements.

If only large ones, the work will look bulky and rough. If on the contrary - broken and overloaded. If you doubt the need for any part, cover it. If it doesn’t get better or worse, then it’s not needed.

The general form of makeup, accessories, and hairstyles should match each other and look harmonious.
