Evgenia Elisova about men's makeup in the work of a makeup artist

The other day there was a live broadcast on the Instagram profile of our resource Pro Hair&Makeup, during which we discussed a variety of issues related to men's makeup. Our speaker was Evgenia Elisova , a professional Makeup Artist & Stylist with 15 years of experience working with such stars as Jamala, Laura Marti, Yasya Minochkina, Yulia Magdych, Mira, Maria Yastremskaya, as well as with politicians and business women. Evgenia is, among other things, a member of the jury of the online competition Pro Beauty Battle , the fourth round of which is now in full swing!

Zhenya, tell us where men’s makeup is used?

Men's makeup in its classical sense is often used in photography and video shooting, on the catwalk, in cinema and on television - you are unlikely to see it on the street. You can also see modern beauty bloggers, rock stars and other artists wearing makeup, for whom it is part of their image.

Why is makeup necessary if a person is interacting with the camera?

Modern cameras convey images very accurately, and any skin imperfections in the form of excessive shine or redness will be clearly visible in the frame. In life you may not even pay attention to this, but on the screen such imperfections will be clearly expressed.

With the help of tonal foundations, we create a soft defocus, which helps to disguise all these imperfections. Also, another task of makeup is to emphasize the natural features of the face.

Male facial features are very voluminous - they protrude forward. Active cheekbones, a prominent chin, nose and forehead... Sometimes men just need to even out their facial tone to make their appearance brighter. In order not to lose volume and definition, it is important to choose a foundation that matches your skin tone or even a shade darker, and also place natural shadows where they should be.

Have you ever done brighter men's makeup?

Yes, I mostly did black smokey eyes. It looks very beautiful and impressive. Also, men sometimes choose other brighter shades for eye makeup, such as red. It all depends on the performer and the image of the artist or blogger. Most often, this type of makeup is done by people who love to express themselves and whose work is related to beauty. Decorative elements on the face attract attention and make this person even more attractive.

Do you think men's makeup has become more in demand recently or can it be called a stable phenomenon?

In my opinion, it is quite stable and constant in Ukraine. As before, it is now used in photo and video shooting, before public speaking, in cinema and television, and on the podium. Makeup is also sometimes done for men for a wedding.

But if you remember South Korea, men’s makeup is considered the norm. Koreans generally actively dictate beauty trends, and American artists pick them up, after which they spread throughout the world. Guys use bases, BB creams, eyebrow products and even eye makeup. While rockers prefer black shades, Korean men love softer brown colors. In South Korea, the cult of beauty clearly rules - both for women and for men.

In the USA, for example, media bloggers often wear makeup - Jeffrey Star, Patrick Ta, James Charles, Manny Mua. They, perhaps, wear makeup even brighter in everyday life than us girls. (Smiles.) But their task is not just to present an image, but also to sell the product - glosses, highlighters, shadows, liners, and so on.
