Interview with the famous master
2019-07-12
Continuation of the interview with the famous makeup artist Alla Churya. Alla Arkhipovna talks about working with the stars of Russian cinema - of the present and bygone eras. And shares the secret of creating a harmonious image on the screen.
The article was first published in the magazine “Makeup&YOU Professional”.
What genres of films are most interesting to the make-up artist (horror, comedy, fantasy, children's or war)? Where can you show your art more clearly? Mastery is required in all genres. Even in children's films, where the main characters are children. The make-up profession consists of more than just make-up art. The expression “golden hands” is not about us. Here everything is decided by the head, and the “hands” are only a performance tool. If you are a competent master and an educated professional, you will find interest in any genre. And showing your own skills when you work in a team is not encouraged. Your virtuosity consists in not being scolded or praised, because you are part of a single whole."Cool fairy tale." Which actors have you worked with? What impact did interacting with these creative people have on you? Having worked in cinema for such a long time, it’s easier to say who I haven’t worked with. I have more than 50 full-length films, so I often met with many actors on the set, and these are almost all stars - from Lyudmila Gurchenko to Armen Dzhigarkhanyan. There weren’t that many of them, 2–3 dozen, as they say now, superstars. For example, we worked with Irina Alferova in several films in a row, Polishchuk also worked with Lyubochka more than once, we were lucky to catch Nikolai Afanasyevich Kryuchkov, Nikolai Rybnikov, Maya Krepkogorskaya. She worked with the famous Stirlitz Vyacheslav Tikhonov and Innokenty Smoktunovsky (the best Hamlet of all time), with the wonderful actor Leonid Kuravlev, with the amazing Nonna Mordyukova and the brilliant Zinovy Efimovich Gerdt, and, of course, with all our Ukrainian actors who were on the staff of the film studio or worked in theaters. I have always loved and love Natalya Sumskaya. God gave her such enormous acting talent! Ivan Mikolaichuk, Ivan Gavrilyuk, Bogdan Stupka, Borislav Brondukov, Les Serdyuk, Kost Petrovich Stepankov, Alexey Gorbunov and Volodya Talashko, Olga Sumskaya, Olga Mateshko, Nina Reus, Valeria Zaklunnaya - can you list them all? This is the color of the Ukrainian intelligentsia! Their work on the set is a unique spectacle! I only now understand what fate has given me.S/c "Shadow warriors". Joint US-Ukraine project
I generally had a good and interesting life. I traveled a lot, saw a lot, knew many people, and these are not just acquaintances, but extraordinary individuals, worthy, smart, talented and well-educated. Of course, they influenced me, what a difference! I came to cinema at the age of 16. This is what raised me. And my parents were amazing. Everything that is worthy in me is their merit. In general, I think that my life has turned out well. Uncover the secret of collaborating with capricious artists. There is no secret. The actor is always partial to his external image, which he has to embody on the screen. These people are creative, persistent, hardworking and demanding, which is why they became successful. Besides, their profession is their bread. Therefore, our professional skills are the only key to complete trust and friendly cooperation. In 30 years I don’t remember a single angry argument or scandal. It so happened that a calm, friendly atmosphere is established in the dressing room, because this is the actor’s last resort before going on the set. Where does work on the image begin? It all depends on the role, although there are no frivolous characters. Even a child's image requires a creative approach. After all, the right makeup (stubborn bangs, a tuft on the top of the head, freckles on the nose) helps emphasize the character of the little hero. A historical film, of course, requires a lot of hard and painstaking work. It begins with the collection and study of iconographic material - chronicle literature about that time. Without a thorough knowledge of the era in which the scripted events take place, it is hardly possible to create a truthful image, otherwise incidents such as a serf peasant woman with a French manicure or nylon lace on the neckline of Anne of Austria cannot be avoided on the screen. Or, even worse, modern hooks instead of lacing on the bodice of a medieval lady. Unfortunately, this is the scourge of modern TV series. To competently create a historical image, it is necessary to focus on the era: makeup, costume, interior, customs and way of life, then the viewer has the effect of presence and empathy.Film "Tango of Death". Your advice to readers. I want to say to the professional audience: study! Education means status, earnings and a prosperous future, the opportunity to work not only in Ukraine, but also abroad. The trend of “fast, cheap and all at once” will end very soon. I wish you creative inspiration, creative ideas and desired results.Read also
