Encountering cicatricial skin changes in clinical practice, a dermatocosmetologist must understand the mechanisms of their occurrence, know cosmetic products and methods of their correction, correctly assess the possibilities of modern cosmetology and predict the results of scar treatment.

Correct management of the wound surface, preventive measures to prevent pathological scarring, early detection of signs of keloid formation are necessary for both the clinician and the specialist working in the field of aesthetic medicine.

A scar (cicatrix) is a secondary morphological element considered in dermatology as a result of the evolution of rashes accompanied by a tissue defect. However, in the medical literature, you can find another definition of the term "scar" - a pathological condition of the skin (a cosmetic defect) that develops as a result of the replacement of the skin's own tissues with connective tissue after surgical interventions and various damaging factors (mechanical, thermal, chemical, ionizing radiation, deep destructive inflammation, etc.).

Today, quite a few classifications of scars are proposed, which are based on systematization by etiological factor, division into surgical and cosmetic, physiological and pathological, by degree of maturity, clinical manifestations, etc. Scales for evaluating the severity of scarring have also been developed. However, the most popular in clinical practice are the simplest classifications.
