Psychological support for patients with acne: expert opinion
Recommendations for specialists
Every specialist has patients with acne problems. Statistics show that a more thorough approach is needed, including the psychological aspect. Let's find out the expert's opinion on this issue.
Andriy Skibytskyi, analytical psychologist, coach, business trainer (Ukraine)
Possession of psychological skills is absolutely necessary for any successful work with people. This statement is all the more true when it comes to the provision of services related to the state of psychological and physical health, and especially to a person's appearance. First of all, it means the skill to understand quite precisely what and why the client feels and how he thinks, as well as to correctly respond to how his feelings and thoughts are revealed. In this short article, I will describe the main characteristics of the psychology of people with acne, as well as give some general recommendations for working with such clients.
It would not be an exaggeration to say that clients with acne suffer from low self-esteem to one degree or another. What is meant is not the obvious possibility that the client may "complex" about the unpleasant appearance of his skin, as a deeper mental process.
Acne does indicate that the client is struggling with low self-esteem. Only, from the point of view of psychology, this disease is a consequence, not the initial cause, of low self-esteem.
