Complications after mesotherapy: delayed reactions

Logo

The success of mesotherapy as an intradermal injection technique depends not only on the correct choice of drug and injection technique, but also on timely recognition and correction of possible complications. Delayed-type reactions, which occur not immediately, but within several days (up to a week) after drug administration, are of particular diagnostic difficulty.

In the late post-injection period, dermatitis may develop, a disease resulting from repeated exposure to allergens contained in cosmetics. These substances may include albumin, bentonite, kaolin, biotin, collagen, elastin, glycerin, lanolin, liposomes, placenta extracts, propylene glycol, royal jelly, tyrosine, salt, agar-agar, and other chemicals.

Soft tissue infections. A wide range of complications are theoretically possible.

The causative agent of the purulent process is most often staphylococcus (as the sole source or in association with streptococcus, Escherichia coli, Proteus and other types of microflora). The cause of the development of purulent complications is a violation of the rules of asepsis either by the cosmetologist during the procedure, or by the patient in the early post-invasive period. General clinical manifestations are typical for purulent-inflammatory processes of any localization: an increase in body temperature from subfebrile to 41 degrees (in severe cases), general malaise, weakness, loss of appetite, headache. The degree of these changes depends on the severity of the pathological process. The basis of the therapy of such complications is timely adequate surgical intervention. The key word is timely: at the slightest suspicion of an infectious complication, we immediately call for help from a surgeon!
