Side effects in permanent makeup: when something went wrong

Note to permanent makeup masters and their clients

Permanent makeup will be performed perfectly if the master, working with the client's skin, takes into account all the features and nuances. That is why it is so important for a specialist to know about all possible side effects.

Side effects during permanent makeup are those unpleasant sensations during the micropigmentation procedure, the occurrence of which, although uncomfortable and undesirable, does not pose a real danger to the client. No special measures are required to eliminate side effects.

All side effects during and after tattooing can be divided into 2 categories:

  • arising from the incompetence of the master;
  • appeared due to the client’s non-compliance with the basic rules for preparing the skin for the procedure, caring for it after tattooing and negligent attitude to contraindications.

Permanent makeup will be performed perfectly if the master, working with the client's skin, takes into account all the features and nuances. That is why it is so important for a specialist to know about all possible contraindications and side effects in order to prevent them in time and not harm the client. Let's take a closer look at each of the side effects.

Soreness of the procedure

The level of discomfort during the introduction of the pigment into the skin depends on two main factors: anesthesia and equipment. If the master was able to correctly perform the application anesthesia, the procedure should be absolutely painless. As for the equipment, the most modern devices should be used, which are designed specifically for tattooing and for a specific task (contour or shading). Also, the level of pain is influenced by the individual characteristics of the client's nervous system and the sensitivity threshold of nerve endings.

In addition, the level of pain during the procedure can also be affected by insufficient psychological contact between the master and the client. Perhaps this is one of the most important points. The greater the level of trust in the master, the better the person is relaxed, and the more painless the procedure will be for him.

It is impossible not to mention the too low threshold of pain sensitivity. As a rule, a decrease in the threshold of pain sensitivity in women occurs on the eve of menstruation, and during ovulation. This phenomenon may be associated with the stresses that have taken place and the general tension of the nervous system.

Swelling in the tattoo area

Edema occurs primarily due to injury to the skin. However, the level of puffiness is also affected by the treated area (for example, camouflaging the area under the eyes usually causes severe swelling, unlike micropigmentation of the eyebrows). Also an important role is played by the individual factor (the body's tendency to form edema), the type of skin, the depth of penetration of the dye into the skin and its quality, the anesthetic used.

With the correct application of the pigment (to the depth of the papillary dermis), vascular disturbance occurs exclusively at the level of the superficial vascular plexus in the papillary dermis. In this case, there is very little capillary bleeding, as a result of which a slight edema may develop, which, with very infrequent exceptions related to the individual characteristics of the skin, completely disappears after 12-24 hours. It is necessary to pay attention to the fact that if the edema still occurs, it should pass in the next day and not be accompanied by itching and rashes. These symptoms indicate an allergic reaction.

With a deeper application of the pigment, the vessels of the deep vascular plexus, located on the lower border of the skin, can be damaged, which provokes the development of persistent and significant edema.

An anesthetic can also provoke the occurrence of edema. Ointment applications, for the most part, contribute to the formation of more pronounced edema than the use of liquid and gel forms of painkillers.

Feeling of tightness of the skin, increased color and the formation of "crusts"

The manifestation of these side effects after tattooing is absolutely normal and represents a natural response of the skin to the injury. With proper care for a new tattoo, the feeling of tightness quickly disappears. As for the crusts, they contribute to the correct fixation of the coloring matter in the skin, so they should never be torn off! The color of the crusts is usually quite darker or brighter than that chosen by the specialist and his client at the consultation, and it can change for another 20 days. The crusts completely disappear after 5-7 days.

The occurrence of hematomas

With a correctly chosen technique of work by a tattoo master, hematomas are a very rare phenomenon, caused by fragility of blood vessels, increased bleeding and the use of adrenaline- or epinephrine-containing drugs that block capillary bleeding, as a result of which blood lingers under the skin, and forming these same hematomas . On the mucous membranes and on the red border of the lips, hematomas pass without a trace in 24-48 hours, on the skin they can remain up to 3-4 days. Be that as it may, superficial hematomas do not affect the final result of the procedure.
