Rhapsody haircut: characteristics and how to choose for clients?
Another comeback from the past
A haircut with a very musical name “rhapsody” is an obvious one hundred percent comeback from the past. Such historical returns are typical for the last two years, since only a few techniques and forms have managed to return to fashion and relevance.
The rhapsody haircut is a multi-layered haircut originally from the 70-80s, which is performed by layering strands on top of each other, creating volume on the hair.
At first glance, this form seems identical to a cascade or ladder, and there really is a visual similarity, but the principle is still different. In the rhapsody haircut, the hair is located at different levels.
“Rhapsody” can be performed in two techniques: graduated or stepped. But a prerequisite is the imposition of one strand on another.
In the crown area, the hair is cut shorter than other areas, and starting from the crown, the length increases gradually. Strands can overlap each other in a chaotic manner. The side strands are cut asymmetrically, ultimately forming a ladder with different widths of steps. Thinning the ends of the hair is mandatory in Rhapsody.
How is a rhapsody haircut performed?
The haircut technology for different lengths is very similar, but we will provide you with an example on long hair.
This haircut should be done along partings along the contour of the face, which are parallel to the hairline.
First you need to form an oval edging of the temporal and parietal areas. The central strand in the parietal zone should be left as long as the bridge of the nose, this will be the shortest layer, and the strands on the temples – up to the length of the shoulders.
This central strand will be the control. Tilt the client's head forward and cut the strands, aligning them with the reference strand. In this case, use the technique of laying strands on strands.
During the process, each strand must be brought to the control strand and cut to the same length. Then complete the edging of the occipital region. Comb your hair back and cut it to even length. Finish everything with thinning.

If the client has thick hair, then by choosing rhapsody, the hairdresser will be able to give it a clearer shape, but if, on the contrary, it is thin, then the haircut will work to add volume and visual thickness.
There are no restrictions on the hair structure for a rhapsody haircut, except for elastic curls. It suits straight, slightly or fairly curly hair. But you should not resort to such a haircut for clients with curls - due to the structure, the shape will not be clearly visible.
There is also no taboo in hair length for Rhapsody. Long hair, mid-length curls and even short locks can be placed in this shape, freeing up styling time. However, in terms of overall appearance, Rhapsody on long hair is in the lead. A great shape for those who want to gain shape but not lose length.
