Together with an expert, we find out what features of wedding makeup a makeup artist should take into account in 2021, whether it is necessary to do a trial makeup, and how to properly prepare the skin before wedding makeup.

Mikhaila Matviychuk - professional makeup & hair stylist, ambassador of the KEVYN AUCOIN BEAUTY brand in Ukraine, trainer at the EgoStyle makeup school, became a guest of the live broadcast on our Pro Hair&Makeup Instagram account, during which we discussed current wedding makeup . We are happy to share interesting answers on preparing for wedding makeup with you.

In your opinion, is it necessary to do a make-up trial?

A makeup trial is usually a good idea. You can see the client in advance, the condition of her skin, the shape of her eyes and face, and also find out what kind of veil, hairstyle and dress she will have. For me, the biggest bonus of trying makeup is to see the girl’s skin. Then I can advise her to go for a quality procedure so that on her wedding day her skin is perfectly prepared for applying decorative cosmetics.

It is important to inform the client in advance that trial makeup is paid for, it is not free. In this case, I take 80% of the cost of wedding makeup. After all, most often the first meeting with a client lasts even longer than on the wedding day: she needs time to think, try something different and make a final decision.

During your makeup trial, I recommend writing down all the products you use so you don't forget until your wedding day and then waste time again trying to find the right shades. But, as practice shows, during wedding makeup, at the request of the client, we still use other elements and means. It is also important during this meeting to outline what the bride will have to do before the wedding day and what skin care to use.

But if the client trusts you, shares your taste and you can easily come to an agreement with her, then wedding makeup can be done immediately on location.

What beauty treatments should you not do before your wedding?

Firstly, you can’t go for eyebrow tattooing right before your wedding day. There's always a chance that something will go wrong, and celebrating your wedding with black or uneven eyebrows is not a good idea.

Secondly, you should not do peelings, because after them the skin will peel for about two weeks, and scales on the skin before makeup are the worst thing that can happen.

Thirdly, cleaning. After all, they can lead to wounds and redness of the skin.

What procedures, on the contrary, do you recommend performing?

For three days before your wedding, I recommend going for a treatment called HydraFacial, which helps cleanse your skin and provide the perfect exfoliation. I can also recommend diamond grinding - after it the skin is smooth and we will not have any problems when applying the tone. Another procedure is GeneO+, which combines massage, cleansing and oxygenation of the skin. It can be done before the wedding day so that the skin is rich, moisturized and has excellent turgor.

If the client does not have the opportunity or desire to go to procedures, home care should be included. Three days before the wedding, in the evenings you need to do a light scrub with a professional product, and not with products from the mass market. The abrasive particles should not be large so as not to scratch the skin. At night, I advise you to apply a moisturizing mask and cover with a good thick cream.

How to prepare your skin before applying makeup on your wedding day?

Under no circumstances should you use oily and thick textures of care products, because in this case the makeup will run. If a client's skin is dry, I use peeling discs and use them to remove pieces of dead skin. But if a girl has any rashes, then such discs should under no circumstances be used, so as not to provoke irritation.

After cleansing the skin, you should apply a moisturizing serum or fluid, and if you see that the skin is not hydrated enough, use a cream with a light texture. We remove any remaining food with dry wipes.

I do not recommend experimenting with bases and creams that contain mint or pine needles, because they can cause a severe allergic reaction.

After this, you can apply the makeup base. For newlyweds, I do not use silicone bases because they are quite dense and can clog pores and leak during the day. Prefer light and sustainable textures. If a girl has an oily skin type, I will not use a matte base, because it blocks the pores and foundations, on the contrary, begin to leak.
