How to choose a powder brush?
For different tasks
Let's figure out how to choose the perfect powder brush based on your tasks and needs. We follow the advice of top makeup artist Elena Krygina so as not to make any mistakes!
A makeup artist who chooses makeup brushes always faces a million questions. What material should they be made of, what shape should be preferred, for what purposes is this or that brush suitable... In this material we explain in detail how to choose a brush for loose and compact powder and what parameters are important to consider.
Powder brush bristles
Elena Krygina advises using natural makeup brushes made from pony, goat or squirrel for dry textures - they better transfer the product to the skin and shade it perfectly.
Another option is duofiber brushes. And although many consider them suitable exclusively for applying foundation, Elena is sure that they are ideal for powdering. Synthetic duofiber fibers apply powder to the skin with a thin veil, and more elastic natural fibers immediately lightly shade the product.
Also, do not forget that at the moment there are a huge number of exclusively synthetic brushes, which are as close as possible in texture to natural ones and cope with all the tasks no worse.
Powder brush shape
With a round cut. This brush is soft, fluffy and voluminous. It is perfect for all skin types and types of powders, so it can be safely used in any situation. With its help, the product can be applied in a light veil without fear of excess, but it is also quite possible to achieve a denser coverage with repeated powdering. A powder brush with a round cut can be pressed or not.
Elena Krygina highlights this disadvantage: with its help it is difficult to work on small areas of the face - the corners of the eyes or the space under the nose.
“I rarely powder with this brush and often use smaller versions. But this is my favorite brush for applying bronzers – the coverage is very light, with the effect of slightly sun-touched skin.”
With an ovoid cut. This brush is elastic, has a round frame, and its cut resembles an egg. It is ideal for dense powdering, especially with compact powders. In this case, you will get a beautiful, uniform and dense layer without any problems.
Elena highlights another advantage: thanks to the pointed tip, a powder brush with an egg-shaped cut makes it easy to work even on the area around the eyes.
Large duofiber. If you are still ready to try duofiber when applying powder, pay attention to large brushes that are designed for dry textures. Thanks to the long bristles, the tool allows you to apply loose powder in a thin layer and blend it well.
Kabuki. Densely packed kabuki brushes with short handles are ideal for dense powdering. This tool will allow you to polish the product into the skin and get the effect of a perfect face, as if processed in Photoshop. Apply powder using kabuki in circular motions.
Important nuances
And a few more tips from Elena Krygina on choosing a powder brush.
- Make sure that the brush is both soft and elastic.
- The more tightly the villi adhere to each other, the denser the coating will be. Keep this in mind when choosing a tool.
- Put huge shapeless brushes aside - they are not capable of applying a light thin layer of powder and may well ruin the foundation layer, as if scratching it.
