A look into the future: trending colors 2022
Getting ready in advance
What trending shades and techniques should a master colorist pay attention to in 2022? Are there any bright anti-trends in coloring, or is it all very subjective? Let's talk to an expert!
Alexey Baluev , two-time absolute champion of Ukraine, silver medalist of the European Championship, best colorist of Ukraine 2019, member of the Ukrainian section Intercoiffure, owner of Long&Short beauty salon
As a practicing master, I have my own opinion about trends. In my opinion, the dyeing color and technique should highlight the client favorably, make the image attractive and fashionable, and not just follow fashion trends dictated by beauty society.
As a master in a beauty salon, I strive to discover new facets of the client, to help him strengthen all the qualities that he wants to show.
A true master does not copy after someone else - he helps create individuality.
All coloring techniques have their own period of life: during one period, some techniques lose relevance, and after a while they return again.
Everything new is well forgotten old. This proverb also applies to coloring techniques. Until recently, there were unclaimed and irrelevant, for example, block coloring . But literally over the last six months they have returned to the streets of Ukrainian cities since the 2000s.

A few years ago I began to notice a trend for bright bangs . Many craftsmen and other clients said that it looked terrible and would never become fashionable. But back in 2021, we observed a huge surge in such colorings - when block coloring is not only in the back of the head area, in the form of individual strands, but also the bang area is segmented, painted in a light or bright contrasting color. This is great, it helps a person reveal his individuality.
I have a rather philosophical attitude towards the issue of anti-trends . If the client and the artist are happy with the choice and the end result, then who can say that something is wrong? It may look strange, irrelevant, but what matters is how a person carries it and how he looks with it, how he feels.
As a master in a salon, I do coloring that is in demand by clients, most of them are different stretches, classic monochromatic coloring in copper and brown shades. Of course, total blonde! But in this diversity there is room for both block and bright coloring ideas. Sometimes I can’t bring my brighter ideas to life on clients, so from time to time I arrange creative shoots where I can bring absolutely everything to life.

A timeless trend is precisely the trend for color stretching , which allows you to create a smooth gradient from natural hair to blonde. They are comfortable, they grow out gently, they hide gray hair, and they allow you to achieve blonde hair that doesn’t need frequent touch-ups. It's refreshing. I am sure that stretching techniques will always be relevant.
Highlighting, ombre, dyeing strands near the face or split dyeing, chestnut hair color - are these trends?
All this is relevant. And I do almost all of this in my salon. For example, a brown shade of coloring can be made colder or warmer depending on skin tone, eye color, and so on. As I indicated above, adjust to the client.
If blonde, what shades are current?
Both pearlescent and ash shades are in demand and will continue to be in demand. Warm and peach shades are increasingly coming back into fashion.
