Last week we published material about clients’ fears and talked to experts about why many are so afraid of getting their hair permed.

Perhaps these fears are not least related to the myths that surround the perm procedure. In this material, hairdresser, colorist TM KROM Roxana Sotnikova spoke about them briefly and to the point.

Myth 1. Only with the help of a bio-perm can you give your hair volume and large curls, but with a chemical composition you can only give small curls sticking out in all directions “a la the 80s”. Reality: a large selection of balanced perm formulations allows professionals to create both volume and bouncy curls on their hair. It is important to choose the correct composition, diameter of the bobbins (papillote, curlers) and conduct a preliminary hair diagnosis. Often, bio-curling compounds are not able to cope with very long and dense hair.

Myth 2. Perm greatly damages and dries out your hair. Reality: Of course, ideally it is better not to use any chemical products (dyes, curling lotions and even tinted shampoos). But what should the fair half of humanity do if there is no volume, but you want to have amazing curls and a well-groomed look every day? And put a minimum of effort and time into it. In this case, perm will be a salvation!

Myth 3. After the perm procedure, do you need to use additional care and styling products? Reality: after the perm procedure (and sometimes before), it is necessary to choose the right care. Basic products that every girl should have: moisturizing shampoo, balm or mask. To maintain moisture in the hair and the structure of the curl, I recommend light leave-in 2-phase conditioners. Properly selected styling products: mousse, modeling cream, gel, etc. + a diffuser attachment for a hair dryer will help create textured or soft curls.

Myth 4. You cannot perm and color or tone on the same day. Reality: You should not dye your hair before curling, because under the influence of curling lotion and fixer (regardless of its pH), the color will become less saturated. In modern technologies, it is possible to perform tinting with dyes without ammonia, reducing the exposure time, but it is very important to strictly adhere to the technologist’s recommendations.

Myth 5. The longer the chemical composition is left on the hair, the longer the curl will last. Reality: the longevity of the curl is determined by the diameter of the curler, the correct composition for the curl and the structure of the hair, which depends on the density, density and degree of damage. It is not recommended to leave the composition on the hair and heat it with a hairdryer, otherwise the hair will be dull and brittle. We are talking about classic perm and bio perm. The exposure time is from 5 to 25 minutes; on bleached hair, time control is every 5 minutes, as recommended by the technologist or manufacturer.
