4 main rules for bright colors: advice from professionals
Clients should be warned about this
More and more clients are switching to the “light side”, but there are several rules for bright colors that you need to follow if you, as a hairdresser, want to give your clients quality results.
Some of the most famous colorists in Britain gave comments to HJ magazine, and we translated the material for you, because every client should know these 4 rules.
Be honest
Sophia Hilton, owner of Not Another Salon and Crazy Color Ambassador:
“We email all of our vibrant color clients ahead of time to let them know they need to be prepared to spend the entire day in the salon. And we even suggest bringing your own lunch! When my client asks when this pigment will start to wash off, I look him straight in the eye and confidently answer: “Right away.”
Never promise a client super-long color durability, otherwise he will always demand it. The best thing that can be done is to give the person the opportunity to purchase everything to maintain the color of the house, so that he himself can control its “disappearance”.
Emphasize the need for home care
Steve Austin, Manic Panic brand educator:
“During a pre-color consultation, I walk clients through the process and discuss their role in maintaining their new shade. And I always emphasize that maintaining color at home is simply necessary. I recommend that my clients wash their hair no more than twice a week in cool water with Olaplex shampoo and conditioner. It not only restores hair, but also helps prolong color - the shampoo does not contain sulfates. I also recommend weekly at-home treatments and the use of Olaplex 6 and 7 for styling and heat protection.”
The coloring process is not lightning fast
Heffy Wheeler, owner of HX Hair and OSMO brand ambassador:
“Many clients don’t realize that black hair can’t be dyed pastel pink all at once. As a colorist, I need to make sure my client fully understands the process. I explain to my clients that if they want a vibrant color, I need to dye their hair platinum blonde first and this can take one session or 6 months of regular bleaching sessions. This conversation gives me a chance to evaluate the possibility of involving your client in the process or recommend something else if the person does not want to participate in it from start to finish.”
Encourage clients to stay with professionals
Heather Mackenzie, Riot Squad member and Pulp Riot teacher:
“Encourage clients who want a bold color to see a professional regularly. Dazzling shades have had a bad reputation in the past because people did not understand the difficulty of creating the perfect canvas for such a tone. A professional is the only person who can get the right vibrant shade, but if a client is concerned about cost, perhaps you could offer them, for example, modeling in a workshop to try out a new technique or color combination. This will allow a person to seek services from a professional, and you will be able to try new techniques and coloring methods.”
