Are bright colors still in trend?
New color rules
As soon as beauty salons began to open after quarantine, clients began to request bright colors more often. Whether it is the “fearlessness” caused by the pandemic, or the desire to cheer up, the fact remains that bright colors are gaining more and more popularity.
HJ magazine asked the international artistic director of Rainbow Room International, Suzie McGill, about bright colors and found out why they are so popular during the epidemic. We have translated this material for you.
Bright hair color gained popularity on Instagram
On social networks like Instagram, bright hair colors have been all the rage for years and are always supported by likes and shares, but in real life, unusual hair colors are less common. However, due to the pandemic, this movement seems to be moving into real life.
That's what Suzie McGill, international artistic director of Rainbow Room International, has noticed among her clients since the salons opened. “Clients are so used to the same hair color for months that they are willing to change it up and choose something completely new,” she says.
“With many clients now working from home, it also allows them to experiment with their color, adding pops of color into the bulk of their hair, or choosing something radically bold that they wouldn't otherwise be able to do if they worked in an office,” continues Suzie.
And while bright colors are usually created for younger clients, Suzie notes that older people are actually experimenting as well: “Older clients are also getting more experimental, going gray and adding more silver tones to their hair. The lockdown period has been very difficult for most of us and I think many clients are enjoying coming into the salon for bolder colors that will bring a smile to their face.”
Traditional technique, unconventional color
Just because you're introducing a bright new shade to your client doesn't mean they need to make a drastic color change. Using techniques like balayage or chunky highlights also adds nuance and personality to each look. “For clients who can’t decide between two bright shades, balayage is a great solution, creating a beautiful contrasting mix. This is truly the right time for clients to live out their rebellious hair color fantasies and try out the color they've always dreamed of,” says Suzie.
Which shade should I choose?
So what shades can you suggest for those who want to experiment? Some of today's most popular hues are on the warmer side of the spectrum: sunny yellow, tangerine, orange and red are some of the most popular shades at Rainbow Room International.
Don't forget about aftercare
Since hair is first lightened for long-lasting bright colors, further active moisturizing and proper care are extremely necessary.
Suzie says, “When discussing these colors and styles with your clients, the condition of the hair is the most important aspect of the color change. After all, first of all, you need to damage your hair as little as possible.”
If this is the client’s first bright coloring, then it is important to discuss all the nuances of caring for the new color. “It is necessary to discuss hair color care with the client. Blonde hair should be treated with color-preserving shampoos,” warns Suzie.
