The topic of choosing and correctly applying sun protection products is always one of the most difficult and at the same time the most demanding. The main task of experts in the field of aesthetic cosmetology and dermatology is a clear understanding of key criteria when recommending sunscreen products.

Solar radiation and its impact on humans

To choose the optimal sunscreen product, it is necessary to remember the characteristics and parameters of ultraviolet waves, because by understanding the mechanism of their influence, we will be able to clearly predict the effect on the skin and cells.

Ultraviolet radiation includes rays of the UVA, UVB and UVC spectrum. The rays of the UVC spectrum have the shortest wavelength and are blocked by the ozone layer 100%, and at the same time, flight attendants, pilots and people who fly airplanes are most exposed to them. Therefore, it is worth closing the porthole curtains and wearing sunglasses, especially during long flights.

As for the effect of UVB rays, it is either a tan or a burn, and the wavelength corresponds to the depth of penetration into the skin at the level of the epidermis, thus stimulating the melanocyte. For our latitudes, the peak exposure to UVB rays is in the spring and summer months, which is especially important for the synthesis of vitamin D.

The depth of penetration of UVA rays into the skin is the level of the dermis. Sun intolerance is associated with UVA-2 rays, while UVA-1 is responsible for photoaging. A feature of UVA rays is that we do not always see the result of exposure immediately, because if a tan or burn appears on the skin from UVB rays, hyperpigmentation due to exposure to UVA radiation can occur even after several years.
