Antioxidants in cosmetic products as prevention of photoaging

Premature aging of the skin is the result of exposure to a number of environmental factors, primarily ultraviolet rays, as well as visible light in the blue spectrum, infrared radiation and environmental pollution. These external factors lead to the formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), which contribute to photoaging and DNA damage.

Therefore, considering antioxidants as an elixir of youth, it is necessary to understand the mechanism of their interaction with ROS. ROS molecules are unstable, highly reactive, and have one or more free electrons. Accordingly, they attack stable molecules, causing a chain reaction that damages healthy cells. From a biochemical point of view, these reactions cause oxidative stress, which leads to the development of an imbalance between the production of free radicals and the body's ability to neutralize them.
