Cheat sheet for permanent makeup artists

Every dissatisfied client is an anti-advertising service for permanent makeup. And vice versa, the less dissatisfied, the higher the image of the service, the more willing to do it. Why does low-quality permanent makeup appear?

Unfortunately, the more permanent makeup develops, the greater the costs in our service sector.

Tattoo removal specialists can say that the more dissatisfied with the quality of the permanent, the more income they have. But only those who perform tattoo removal and permanent makeup procedures, narrowly engaged in this area, can say so.

For permanent makeup masters, the exact opposite logic works. The more people who are dissatisfied with permanent makeup, the less clients they have, and, accordingly, the less income they have. Every dissatisfied person is an anti-advertising service for permanent makeup in his environment. And vice versa, the less dissatisfied, the higher the image of the service of permanent makeup, the more willing to do it.

In this regard, each of those involved in the permanent makeup business is interested in doing everything in their power to reduce dissatisfaction. This applies not only to masters and service providers, but also to trading companies, including those that organize training in permanent makeup.

Experts state that for the last 7-8 years they have had to talk several times a day with clients who come with requests to remove or correct permanent makeup. If you take care and start keeping statistics and analyzing the reasons for the appearance of what clients call an unsuccessful result, poor-quality work, then the following list of reasons for the appearance of what they do not like may appear. Recall that one of the main criteria for the quality of permanent makeup is the aesthetic and moral satisfaction of the client from the result of the service rendered in the short and long term.

So what are the reasons for the appearance of works that clients do not like? Below we will try to formulate these reasons.

Without make-up - not a step

The main reason for the vast majority of cases of marriage in permanent makeup is that this art is practiced by masters who either have no education in the field of make-up or do not have a natural vision of the harmony of lines and harmony of color on the face.

Permanent makeup is, by definition, makeup. And make-up should be done by makeup artists either by profession or, as they say, from God. Professional makeup artists resent the fact that non-makeup artists are getting into permanent makeup. And this is absolutely fair.

Permanent makeup is a cosmetic service, the essence of which is the pigmentation of skin areas on the face by performing procedures associated with the introduction of special dyes into its upper layer. Permanent make-up procedures are performed with a special tool, and the dye in the composition of the pigment is injected into the upper layer of the skin through the epidermis at the tip of the needle.

The purpose of permanent makeup is the embodiment of the client’s idea, as a customer and permanent makeup master, as a makeup artist, to create a color solution on certain areas of the skin of the face to achieve the desired aesthetic effect.

A number of reasons are directly related to the sketching stage.

The self-confident master does adventurous permanent makeup without a sketch or without the client's approval of the sketch (“don't worry, I myself know how to do it and what suits you”). Including there are cases when, for example, on one century a sketch was drawn, shown to the client, and on the other - “don't worry, I'll do it too”.

The master drew the sketch in such a way that the client, while approving it, did not understand what he was actually asserting. The sketch did not give the client any idea about the future permanent makeup. She did not understand how much the future permanent makeup corresponded to the image of the final result that was in her mind, and for the sake of which she came to the master. Usually in this case, the client, looking at the sketch, says: “Well, I agree, you know better, you are a specialist.”

The sketch was drawn by the master with such a tool that did not allow him and the client to unambiguously see the boundaries of future work. This happens, for example, if the master drew a sketch with a not hard enough cosmetic pencil.

After the sketch was approved, application anesthesia “spoiled” the sketch, and the master, without restoring it, arrogantly began to perform permanent makeup from memory.

The master violated the principle: In the presence of post-procedural edema, you should not try to correct your work, no matter how obvious the need for this may seem to either the master or the client.”

Firstly, you need to trust your sketch, and, secondly, in order to trust it, you need to make it with such a tool that gives a clear and unambiguously perceived border of the sketch, and also to accurately fix this border during the first pass with a needle at the very beginning of the procedure.

Are you technically savvy?

The master undertook to do the work in a technique that he does not own and formally performs the work according to the instructions received at one of the master classes.

Unfortunately, the purpose of conducting a number of master classes is not to teach the peculiarities of performing the procedure in a particular technique, but to "self-promotion" and raise money. The illusion of simplicity in the performance of artwork appears among the masters after such superficial demonstrations. The consequences of the work of the master according to a certain mastered template is costly for our clients. Such works can be called experimental. The master himself does not know what will happen in the end and whether the client will receive satisfaction.

For example, the use of thin lines that mimic the direction of hair growth is just one of a number of artistic techniques that can be used when performing permanent eyebrow makeup. To do this, the master must be able to accurately apply it and only in those cases, and in those areas of the eyebrows, when it is justified in terms of achieving naturalness in perception in this particular case.

The promotion of permanent makeup in the so-called hair technique leads to the fact that masters, deprived of the artistic perception of eyebrows, begin to use this technique as an independent technique and often clumsily and out of place. For such masters, it may be better to use a somewhat simpler shadow imitation technique or a cosmetic pencil.

Another case: the master, due to lack of knowledge, but with great motivation in momentary earnings, tries to camouflage an undesirably pigmented area of skin to match the skin color of his surroundings. The result is more work for the skin dye remover (white and beige dyes are more difficult and longer to remove), and the client will have to endure more dye removal procedures than if there were no camouflage attempts.

The master does not have sufficient knowledge about the properties of various pigments and undertakes to perform permanent makeup on the eyelids with pigments for an artistic tattoo.

The master performs work in a zone of increased risk of pigment spreading. This is, of course, the skin area at the outer corner of the eye, and the area of skin near the inner corner of the eye, and the skin at the corners of the lips.

The master undertakes to camouflage scars without having a sufficient palette of pigments to perform this work, or without warning the client about his limited ability to reduce the visibility of the scar.

The master did not warn the client that permanent makeup in the process of “wearing” it can change its shade and even color.

The master does not have the necessary knowledge on the selection of pigment, taking into account skin color. As a result, for example, the brown pigment on the eyebrows turned red unexpectedly quickly.

The master introduced the pigment deeper than necessary. As a result, the color turned out to be darker and noticeably colder than expected.

The master, in order to obtain a clear expressive contour of the lips, in accordance with the request of the client, overdid it with an overly thorough and traumatic work with a needle along the contour of the lips. As a result, the contour color turned out to be actually more expressive, but not at all the one that the client wanted. Outline color "turned blue".

Instead, following the results of the first procedure for the second, it was necessary to choose the right pigment for the lip contour. The master should remember that in order to obtain an optimal result, in many cases it is better to tactically distribute the implementation of permanent makeup into stages and do it in 2-3 procedures.

Before the procedure of lip tattooing, the master did not inform the client that it is possible to even out the asymmetrical contour of the lips with their obviously asymmetrical natural volumetric filling not only with the help of permanent makeup, but also with the help of contour plastics. As a result, in the future, after increasing the volume of the lip with the help of a filler, it became necessary to remove excess permanent makeup above this lip.

The master was not convincing enough or did not warn the client at all that blepharoplasty can lead to a change in the location of the arrows on the eyelids in relation to the eyes.

The master was not convincing enough at the preliminary consultation that an overly wide eyeliner and a long arrow on the eyelids would look ridiculous in the absence of general facial makeup. The same applies to eyeshadows so thoughtlessly promoted in recent times.

The master did not warn that with permanent make-up blush on the cheeks, the client should avoid ultraviolet radiation. Otherwise, her soft pink cheeks can change color, and blush, along with a tan, will turn into completely undesirable dark spots.

Dishonest advertising

A salon or a master, advertising their services, assured that additional procedures would not be needed. "We do without corrections." In practice, this is far from always the case, and the offended client does not go for finishing work, but decides to remove the imperfect version of permanent makeup.

In advertising they write that permanent makeup is done for 3-5 years. Seeing from her own experience that after 1-2 years it is necessary to go for quality support, the client considers herself deceived and, being offended, decides to remove permanent makeup. In this case, unjustified expectations cause an emotional reaction on the part of the client, which may be followed by anti-advertising of the entire permanent makeup service.

An unfair promise for 3-5 years can be read on many websites of salons and clinics offering permanent makeup. Agree that after reading this, the client has the right to assume that she will have permanent makeup of the quality she needs at least 3 years, and maybe 5 years.

The master did not warn the client that the result of one procedure can in most cases be a semi-finished product to one degree or another and an additional procedure is likely to be required. Or - he warned, but was not convinced that the client understood this.

The client was not asked to read and sign the informed consent, which should set out all the main features of permanent makeup. As a result, what the master said orally did not reach the consciousness of the client. The importance of a client signing informed consent should not be underestimated. I would also like to advise the masters not to receive a formal signature from the client, but to make sure that she adequately understood and understood all the points from the content of this document. That is, it is important not only the exhaustive content of informed consent, but also how it was communicated to the client during the consultation process.

Not only a master, but also a psychologist

The master, having done the permanent make-up procedure, did not find the opportunity to ask the client not only what happened on her face after healing and the manifestation of the pigment, but also what was in her soul. As a result, there is a possibility that it is not the master who forms in her mind the correct perception of the result obtained, but completely strangers. They may not have the necessary knowledge about permanent makeup, but they will be happy to express their opinion. And depending on the specific situation, they can make anti-advertising not only for this master, but for the permanent make-up service in general.

The master called the client and asked about her impression of the result of the procedure. However, having heard the dissatisfied comment, he failed to adequately evaluate her statements. A possible reason for this is the lack of theoretical knowledge that was not obtained in the process of superficial training in one of the many permanent makeup courses. As a result, the interpretation of the client and her environment of the unfinished permanent makeup that she sees on her face may not be in favor of continuing to improve it with additional procedures.

I would also like to draw attention to the fact that in the context of the complexity and ambiguity of the permanent makeup service, not only the master’s competent explanation of the features of permanent makeup to the client is of great importance, but also how he conveys this information to her, how convincing he is. And this is the work of the master, as a psychologist.

The master did not provide the client with adequate anesthesia. As a result, the client does not want to meet with the master again and do the additional procedure necessary to achieve the desired quality, but wants to remove the existing imperfection.

The client admits her guilt that she herself insisted on the form of the future permanent makeup, which the master did not recommend. The master, perhaps, was not ready to warn the client with sufficient reason not to perform the permanent makeup, which, with a high degree of probability, she would want to remove after a while. Examples of such arguments include the following:

- you should not do for many years what is fashionable today;

- an erroneous motivation to do permanent makeup, for example, on the eyelids, of the volume that the client does to herself almost every morning. Permanent make-up is intended primarily to look satisfactory and harmonious and without general make-up on the face;

- you should not make arrows on the eyelids, which after blepharoplasty can noticeably change their location relative to the eyes. And it will be very difficult to correct this situation.
