The TikTok platform is a platform for creating and distributing videos and online broadcasts. In our material, a master who very successfully runs an account on this social network shared his experience.

How did you decide to film on TikTok? What was your first video?

I downloaded TikTok at the end of last year, but like most people, I only watched with interest the new social network and what was happening there. I started posting my first videos in March 2020 before the lockdown. At first these were reposts of my before/afters from Instagram, as well as just entertaining vines on a random topic.

Your account has more than 100 thousand subscribers. How long did it take for such an audience to gather?

Until August 2020, I continued to periodically shoot videos on various topics, looking for my own style and manner of presentation. By that time, my TikTok audience numbered only 75 people. At the beginning of August, I finally decided that I needed to change something and move towards developing a more professional and useful content format for viewers on my account. I started experimenting, and eventually the videos began to gain momentum and get featured in recommendations. Now I have almost 113K subscribers in 4 months.

What are the advantages of the TikTok platform over, say, Instagram?

At some point, Instagram seemed quite monotonous and boring to me, perhaps due to the excess of commerce there. In TikTok, on the contrary, in my opinion, there is more life, dynamics and “sadness”, so to speak. In addition, the audience there is more contact and lively, 100% organic, whatever one may say.

Hate is quite common on TikTok. How often do you see negative comments on your videos?

Yes, this is a fairly common phenomenon these days, unfortunately, and not just on TikTok. Sometimes haters appear under my posts. But, fortunately, everything is fine with my self-criticism and worldview, so most often I try to perceive hate with irony and a touch of humor. In the end, haters are also good at increasing activity on any profile.

Do you think a master/hairdresser/colorist needs a TikTok account? If so, please provide reasons why this platform may be useful.

Well, of course, this is everyone’s choice and preference! My personal opinion: nowadays, any beauty artist simply needs to be on social networks such as Instagram and TikTok.

Today TikTok has many advantages and opportunities over other social networks, starting from a convenient intuitive interface, a cool video editor and a huge collection of free modern music for my videos and ending with the fact that it is truly a 100% live audience and a real opportunity for any master to tell to the world about yourself.

What types of videos (perhaps by topic) are good candidates for recommendations?

This is a very controversial issue. I'll tell you that even people who work at TikTok won't always be able to answer it clearly. After all, the TikTok audience is still very diverse. Let's just say that in 90% of cases, getting into the recommendations is a matter of chance!

How long does it take you on average to create one video?

It all depends on the complexity of the processes involved in the video, as well as the genre of the video itself. Sometimes you can shoot and post a video in 30 minutes, but there were cases when I spent 3 days on filming, editing, dubbing and all related processes.

Have you ever noticed any mistakes made by other masters in maintaining an account or creating videos?

I will say this, no one is perfect! I am sure that some expert will find many, in his opinion, errors in my account. Something will always be considered a mistake for one person, and a highlight for another.

Give some advice to a master who is planning to start creating videos for TikTok. Where should I start? How often should you post videos?

First, you need to understand why you need all this and whether you are ready to waste your time. If you understand and are ready, then don’t be afraid to fantasize, experiment and try different genres and presentation styles.

A lot of so-called TikTok experts say that you need to make and post between 3 and 10 videos every day to get recommended.

In my opinion, this is not entirely true, although, of course, there is some truth in this, because the more you shoot and try, the faster you will “feel” and find that uniqueness in yourself that millions of viewers will willingly appreciate.
