We are all a little GMO

Is there a connection between skin diseases and microorganisms on our skin? Why is it not necessary to «sterilize» the skin? How do microorganisms help us evolve and adapt to our environment?

In 2015, scientists from Cambridge published a comparison of human "genetic maps" with animals and bacteria. And an interesting picture emerged: we are literally stitched with other people's genes, which changed us step by step in the process of evolution.

For example, it is now believed that the ability of cells to synthesize hyaluronic acid came from fungi, and the probability of obesity depends on the mutation of a gene that came to us from bacteria.

It is believed that an adult "carries" about 3 kg of live weight of various microbial communities. And they actively share their genes with us as a thank you, so we've all been GMOs for a long time. And here you don't need to panic and run to sterilize the skin. All this micro-army helps us evolve and adapt to the environment, it is an active assistant of our immune system.

Scientists wondered: is there a connection between skin diseases and microorganisms on our skin? It turned out to be "yes", straight and strong as an anchor chain. Today, almost all skin conditions (eczema, allergies, dryness, acne, etc.) are described taking into account the factor "at the same time, microbes feel like this...". Therefore, it is logical to try to find ways of communication with this subtle and small world.
