In women, long before menopause, hormonal changes begin, which affect both the functioning of internal organs and the skin of the face and the whole body. In one of the articles, we talked about a decrease in estrogen levels as one of the important causes of skin aging. Let's talk about other changes in the body that significantly accelerate involution processes.

It has been proven that the activity of the sebaceous glands also depends on the level of sex hormones: estrogens reduce the number and size of these glands, while androgens have the opposite effect, stimulating their secretory activity.

Clinical studies have shown that sebum secretion decreases with age. In postmenopause, compared to estrogens, the level of androgens decreases more gradually, so some women may experience a relative predominance of androgens secreted by ovarian stromal cells under the influence of an increase in the level of gonadotropins, clinical manifestations of which are manifested by oily, porous skin, acne, seborrhea.

However, it should be remembered that androgens, which are normally contained in small quantities in a woman's body, stimulate cell mitoses.

Many women note changes in the hair and nails. Estrogens stimulate the formation of globulin that binds sex hormones (androgens and estrogens). With a decrease in estrogen production, the production of this globulin decreases, which leads to an increase in the content of free testosterone. This can be manifested by increased facial hair growth. Moreover, the rate of hair loss changes. Hair on the head normally falls out and grows back asynchronously. With a decrease in estrogen production, these processes occur synchronously, which creates the appearance of increased hair loss.
