Vyshyvanka on the body: options for a patriotic tattoo
Vyshyvanka Day 2022: buy a shirt or get a tattoo?
On the eve of Vyshyvanka Day, which is celebrated in Ukraine every third Thursday of May, let's talk about tattoos with national ornaments
In one of the previous articles , we already wrote that a tattoo with a national theme has become one of the trends and is gaining more and more popularity. It is by applying national symbols to the body that Ukrainians emphasize their belonging to a strong state that has gone through a difficult path of its formation and continues to fight for independence.
The most popular tattoos are tattoos with coats of arms, images of Cossacks and warriors.
Separately, one can single out a tattoo with a Ukrainian ornament, a tattoo-vyshyvanka. There are more and more "embroidered" drawings. Tattoos with Ukrainian ornaments look good on any part of the body - on the shoulder, forearm, wrist, ankle, back or thigh. Such patterns are chosen by both men and women.
Traditional vyshyvanka: history and symbols
The history of Ukrainian ornaments is very ancient. They are found on houses, dishes, clothes.
Vyshyvanka is a national Ukrainian shirt, which is characterized by ornamental embroidery in the form of various geometric shapes, flowers, animals, etc. For our ancestors, vyshyvanka was a festive, not everyday wear. Shirts differed in style, color, pattern. Interestingly, not only every region of Ukraine, but even individual villages can boast of their special embroidered shirts.
Embroidery was used primarily for sacred purposes, it was considered a talisman. Some vyshyvankas were originally created as ritual and ceremonial ones. In national patterns, three groups of ornaments were most often used: geometric patterns, vegetation, animals.
Vyshyvanka tattoo
Like vyshyvanka on clothes, vyshyvanka tattoo is also a pattern in which its own code is hidden. This code is the amulet, so its choice must be approached sensibly. Each point, triangle, square - all this has its own meaning.
Geometric patterns are the most numerous group of symbols. Simple figures, according to the ancient Slavs, could reflect the character of a person or even change him. The most popular tattoo symbols are:
- rhombus - a sign of fertility in Slavic mythology. Rhombuses were most often embroidered on wedding clothes, towels;
- square - a symbol of harmony and perfection, as well as strength, courage, stamina;
- spiral - a symbol of variability, cyclicity of being, fluidity;
- triangle - a sign associated with the Holy Trinity; an ancient symbol representing protection;
- the cross is a symbol of harmony and protection from dark forces.
Plant patterns on the body reflect prosperity, harmonious life. They have a variety of colors. Among plant symbols, the most common are viburnum, sunflower, lily, rose, and grapes. Interestingly, poppies, now popular as an element of the pattern, were practically not used in traditional Ukrainian embroidery, because they were a symbol of death and sadness.
For a tattoo with animal symbols, you can choose images of a nightingale, dove, butterfly, horse, bear.
When choosing a specific sketch, you should focus on the meaning of each of the symbols.
The trend for patriotic tattoos is gaining momentum. Ukrainians are not only the most courageous, but also the most talented people. Tattoo artists in their practice develop thousands of stylish and unique sketches, among which everyone can choose their own, which will emphasize their individuality.
So, if you don’t have national clothes yet, look for a place on your body to always have an embroidered shirt with you.
