March 9 marks the 208th anniversary of the birth of the Ukrainian poet, prose writer, thinker, painter, graphic artist, ethnographer and public figure Taras Shevchenko.
Shevchenko has become a symbol of the struggle of many generations of Ukrainians for freedom and independence, both in the 19th and 20th centuries, and in the 21st century, when the new Russian empire is trying to destroy everything Ukrainian.
In the 19th century, Shevchenko's poetry became a powerful factor in the formation of Ukrainians as a nation, it became an impetus for self-awareness. We experienced a similar phenomenon in 2013-2014, when the Maidan became the impetus for the realization of us as representatives of a political European nation, for whom Shevchenko's work became nourishing.
