Trendy color for men
Brave enough
Men are increasingly deciding to dye their hair - but why? If your client comes in with a request for a bright hair color, we know what to advise.
HJ magazine recently asked some of Britain's best colorists whether it's true that client demand for bright colors among men is set to increase, and what shade looks stylish.
“Over the last year and a half, I’ve noticed a real shift in men’s hair color. Highlights and toning are some of our most popular services, but balayage, or guy balayage as we call it, has also proven popular,” explains colorist Christabel LeGrand . While working with Luka Chitty, she noticed that men began to visit barbers more often for haircuts, and come to salons for coloring.
Stylists Kate Wingrove and Giuseppe Stelitano of Trevor Sorbie Salon have noticed an increase in the number of male clients who want to dye their hair after bleaching it. But natural color still wins.
How has society changed?
We can safely say that society has changed and now it is easier to accept any changes in a person’s appearance. Even office workers, who, as we are used to, have a strict dress code, can already afford bolder colors without prohibitions and condemnations.
“Over the last ten years, men's hairstyles have become more diverse, and virtually everything is accepted in this fashion. The more experiments, the better for us, hairdressers!” - Kate Wingrove and Giuseppe Stelitano.
According to them, designers now want to play more with color and adjust the style to the hairstyle and hair color, and not vice versa. “For example, in 1970s and 80s looks, hair color plays an important role in achieving the final look. Designers take inspiration from the hairstyles of people they see on the streets and style clothes specifically to match their hair,” they add.
What color will become trendy?
Bright colors may not suit all your clients, and that's okay. However, there are many color variations that you can offer men. “Use oranges and yellows, but tone them down to make them softer and more natural,” suggest Kate and Giuseppe. For example, instead of bright yellow, go pale lemon - it will be a muted version of the trending creative color.
“I believe we will see a shift towards more mainstream colors for men - soft pastels, pinks, purples and icy tones will become the norm,” says Christabel LeGrand.
“I love creating custom mixes using L'Oréal's Pulp Riot semi-permanent dyes. They have a conditioning base and the color doesn’t wash out so quickly.”
By the way, Christabel and the Pulp Riot team will perform on the stage of HJ Salon International, where they will demonstrate creative coloring for men and women live.
