How do semi-permanent hair dyes work and why is this coloring sometimes called tinting? We'll tell you in the material!

Semi-permanent dyes are dyes that contain aromatic carbohydrates and ammonia derivatives. These dyes are not able to work on their own, so to activate they must be combined with a minimum percentage of hydrogen peroxide. The amount of auxiliary activator depends on the task in staining. If the master is faced with the task of performing tone-on-tone dyeing, then this is from 1.5 to 1.8%, if it is necessary to lighten the hair (by 1-1.5 tones) - from 3 to 4.5%.

Clients like to resort to these dyes because, due to their significantly lower pH level, they act on the hair in a more gentle way.

In semi-permanent dyes, molecules can be of two types:

  • oxidative (they require oxidation with H 2 O 2 and penetrate only into the upper layers of the cortex);
  • tinting (this type requires oxidation with air and water, the dyes are fixed only in the cuticle and do not penetrate the cortex).

To solve what problems can you use semi-permanent dyes?

Dyeing tone on tone or a little darker, since semi-permanent dyes do not have the ability to lighten hair as much as permanent ones.

For easy lightening of natural undyed hair by 1-1.5 tones (here everything depends on the dye manufacturer, since not all products are capable of this).

Semi-permanent hairstyles will not cover gray hair 100%, but will slightly retouch it. The percentage of such retouching can reach 70%, which is a very good result for gentle coloring.

Semi-permanent dye has a gentle effect on the hair structure, but this does not mean that the negative impact is zero. The dye will be washed out gently and gradually, the border of the regrown roots will be almost invisible, but since the dye contains derivatives of ammonia, acid, and alkali, everything will not return to the original base.

Very often, coloring with semi-permanent dyes is called tinting. This is due to the fact that the effect of the former is similar to the effect of toning:

  • low durability;
  • impossibility of strong lightening;
  • simple application process due to its soft consistency You can take thicker strands than with permanent dyeing, and apply not only with a paint brush, but also with a sponge, which greatly reduces application time;
  • care effect after coloring with such dyes. Almost all manufacturers try to enrich them with care components. Various moisturizing and nutritional components are added to dyes.

What is important for a master to remember?

The dyes contain monoethanolamine, a water-soluble substance. Therefore, after coloring, before applying shampoo, it is necessary to thoroughly rinse your hair with water (at least 5-7 minutes) to remove it and prevent it from accumulating in the hair structure. This rule applies to all ammonia-free dyes.
