We're not afraid to wear red lipstick, but red eyeshadow? It sounds dangerous and not entirely wearable. Together with a makeup artist, we’ll figure out why they’re worth adding to your beauty arsenal.

Maybelline New York makeup artist Gabriel Almodóvar doesn't agree that red eyeshadow should be taken the seventh route. In fact, they are completely wearable, but it will take some skill to make the makeup look harmonious and beautiful. Whether you're looking to create a bold pop of color on your lids or a subtle smoky eye, Almodóvar has some helpful tips for using a bold shade.

Choose the right shade

Who suits red eyeshadow? The makeup artist convinces that if you choose the right shade, this beauty product can be used by every girl.

"The right shade of red eyeshadow is important," says Gabriel. Before applying makeup, determine the client's skin tone. Red shades with a reddish undertone look best on fair skin tones, and pure red on medium skin tones. For dark-skinned girls, it is better to choose dark shades of red: burgundy, wine or eggplant. The makeup artist recommends NYX Professional Makeup Hot Singles Shadow in Heat for fair skin tones, NYX Primal Colors in Crimson for olive skin, and Urban Decay Eyeshadow for darker skin tones.

Even out your complexion

Once you've chosen the shade that suits your client best, even out the complexion around the eyes. It is important to hide all redness and dark circles under the eyes. Apply concealer to your lower lash line and don't forget about dark shadow in the inner corners of your eyes. "The bluish tint of under-eye circles can be made worse by red eyeshadow, so cover it up well," says Gabriel Almodóvar. Also, don't forget to hide the red wreaths on your eyelids.

Be sure to apply foundation all over your face to create a blank canvas before using red eyeshadow.

Change bronze to terracotta

If she is used to using warm shades of eyeshadow such as bronze, copper or gold, transform them slightly to achieve a warm red color. "Because the tones are so similar, it's a really easy way to keep you in your comfort zone," says the makeup artist. If you want to wear red eyeshadow all over your lid, use a more neutral color (brown works well in this case) in the crease to define your eye makeup.

Use eyeliner

To make your makeup more impressive and expressive, use eyeliner. "Dark shades of liner will give bright colors some depth and definition to the eyes," says Gabriel. You can highlight only the upper eyelid or use a liner on the lower eyelid as well - it all depends on the image you have in mind. And for the bravest girls - the brightest ideas! For example, a double arrow. Just above the black line, draw a sweeping red line - the two-tone effect is worth it!

Make a smokey eye

If bright mono-shades are not your option, try creating a dusty smokey eye in red tones. "Apply red eyeshadow to the inner corner of your eyelid, mixing the bright color with a black shade on the outer corner," says the Maybelline New York makeup artist. Layering different shades of red will give your eyes depth and contrast. To make your eyes even more expressive, apply a metallic shadow to the center of your eyelid.

Don't overdo it with accents

We hope we've convinced you that this trend is versatile and wearable, but be careful not to go overboard with the amount of makeup. When finishing your makeup look, stay away from pigmented blush and bright shades of lipstick - let your eyes be the star of the show! Light correction, a subtle blush on the cheeks and a neutral shade of lipstick are just what you need!
