Neat and harmonious makeup for teenagers is a special form of art, especially relevant during proms. Our regular expert Olesya Koryakina tells us how to perform it and what a makeup artist should not forget about.

What features are important to consider when doing makeup for teenagers?

It is necessary to understand that cosmetics are selected taking into account age. If a girl uses an arsenal from her mother’s cosmetic bag, she can harm her skin, cause allergies, irritation or itching.

Beautiful teenage makeup is a way of self-expression, visual simplicity, but at the same time a carefully thought out image.

First, carefully assess the condition of the client’s skin: if the skin is susceptible to allergic reactions, minimize the use of cosmetics! Choose cosmetics with a soothing healing effect or based on natural ingredients, as they will have a beneficial effect on the skin of young girls.

Teenage makeup should be as natural as possible, because on such a young face, excess makeup will look ridiculous! Do not overuse dense textures with very bright pigments. Yes, teenagers often like to stand out, but it’s better to add some kind of accessory (for example, rhinestones or stars) to your makeup than blue shadows. It will look much more impressive!

What mistakes in makeup can visually turn a young girl into an adult woman?

When doing makeup for young girls, you should not use pencil or eyeliner - they can change facial features and add age. If you don’t want to give up the pencil, apply the product to match your hair color. At the same time, it should not be visible on the face: the pencil should be gently shaded to create a natural effect.

It is important to understand that any makeup is not a reason to demonstrate the entire available arsenal of cosmetics. Therefore, the main mistake in makeup for teenagers is the excessive use of bright shades of eye shadow, lipstick and blush.

What shades of cosmetic products should you use?

When choosing the shade of powder and blush for young girls, strive for natural colors that are as close as possible to the natural skin tone. Shades with peach and pinkish undertones are allowed (depending on skin type). The concealer should be half a tone lighter than your natural complexion.

Shadows can be taken in two or four shades - this will create a natural effect when shaded. You should not use acidic pink or blue colors: cold colors look ugly, and pinkish and reddish tones will give your eyes a sick look. Experiments with aggressive tones are unacceptable so as not to destroy the natural beauty.

The ideal lip color for teenage makeup is transparent. At a young age, girls' lips are naturally bright, so a transparent gloss is what you need. And if you want to add a neat accent, use coral, coffee, nude and light terracotta shades. It is better to abstain from mother-of-pearl: it requires clean skin and white teeth.

How should girls prepare their skin before applying makeup?

Due to changes in hormonal levels (against the background of maturation of the body), in the period of 12-16 years the skin on the face rarely looks perfect. If a girl considers herself an adult, she needs to start with careful skin care. Otherwise, you can lose the beauty and health of your skin, and also become a hostage to your own complexes.

Therefore it is important:

  • thoroughly cleanse the skin before using cosmetics;
  • cleanse it after using cosmetics (if a girl uses micellar water, remind her that it also needs to be washed off with toner);
  • use special beauty products for cleansing (water alone is not enough - it can dry out the skin);
  • use a soothing or moisturizing (if the skin is dry) cream;
  • Moisturize your lips before using lipstick.

In adolescence, rashes are almost inevitable, and according to statistics, in European countries about 85% of all young people experience this. However, if after 1-2 months of regular care the girl does not observe an improvement in her skin condition, it makes sense to consult a dermatologist.

How to disguise acne and rashes that often occur in teenagers?

To hide imperfections on your face, I recommend using stick foundations. They have excellent coverage density, but they need to be used precisely in the exact place where the problem is found! Applying foundation all over your face, and even powdering it, is absolutely not worth it - this way you will clog your pores and the rashes may worsen. As always, carefully monitor the cleanliness of your brushes and cosmetic products so as not to provoke an inflammatory process on your face.

What eye makeup is suitable for clients of this age category?

I don’t recommend using eyeliner or pencil for daytime makeup, but shadows are fine. For evening makeup, for example, for a prom, it is permissible to use these products to give the look more expressiveness.

Give preference to neutral, delicate shades of eyeshadow: peach, pinkish, beige, coffee. Choose exclusively matte textures - glitter is inappropriate in daytime eye makeup for young girls. Save sparkling shadows for parties or special events.

Using voluminous and lengthening mascara will immediately create an unnatural effect and may look inappropriate in everyday life. Therefore, strike a balance and choose a mascara that only gives color without any additional effects. I recommend using dark brown mascara - it will look as natural as possible!

What about lip makeup?

In everyday light makeup, it is not advisable to use bright and overly saturated shades. Moreover, the lips of young girls do not need this.

Apply a moisturizing balm first, as lips often suffer from dryness and need hydration and protection. When the balm is absorbed, you can apply gloss in a delicate natural shade or tint.

From personal experience, I know that teenagers prefer matte lipstick textures, but they make girls look older. But if the client really wants a matte texture, use a pencil! It will look on the lips like a matte lipstick, but it does not have such a dense texture and looks more natural on the lips.
