How to dry and style your hair with a brush?
Memo to the master

Brush styling is a universal and basic salon styling that a master definitely needs to be able to perform. In this material, together with an expert, we will understand what a “brush” is, what it is intended for and how to use it.

A brush is a round brush for styling hair. I would highlight four main types of brushes:
- brush with natural (or artificial) bristles;
- brush with massage teeth;
- “thermal brush” with a metal base;
- combination brush.
The first type of brush is well suited for “smoothing” hair, polishing it and giving maximum shine.
The second type is suitable for curling hair.
Thermal brush is the most versatile, suitable for both ironing and curling.
Combined brushes are not for everybody, but they also have their uses.
Styling hair with a brush is, as a rule, the second stage after working the hair with a flat brush (skeleton).
The principle of setting strands when laying on a brush is the same as when laying on curlers - the width of the base of the strand is equal to (or slightly less than) the width of the working surface of the brush, and the thickness of the strand is the diameter of the brush.
The sequence of working with a brush consists of three stages: the first stage is combing and warming up the strand, the second stage is winding, the third stage is cooling the strand.
One of the main conditions for proper brushing is to create tension in the hair, which will guarantee the elasticity and durability of the curls. You can cool your hair with the cold air of a hairdryer or, after removing the strand from the brush, re-twist it around your fingers and secure it with a clip.
Main mistakes when working with a brush:
- incorrectly selected strand for processing;
- insufficient heating temperature of the strand;
- low tension of the strand when winding;
- insufficient hair cooling.
Clients are often interested in how to repeat a similar styling at home. There are a lot of options for home styling: styling with a hairdryer, with a brush, with Velcro curlers. First, we dry the hair, spreading it against the growth direction to get maximum volume at the roots. Next, a fairly gentle option for damaged hair would be to use hair curlers. It is enough to hold them on your hair for 20-30 minutes, and then unravel and separate the curls with your hands - and that’s it, the styling is ready. But your hair must be dry before using curlers!
A very clear example of such cheating can be seen in technology:
