Grunge style in hairstyles: its characteristics and examples

Initially, grunge was a street style, the identifying characteristics of which have always been negligence, sloppiness, and sometimes even sloppiness. Hence the name, because grunge literally means “dirt.”

The so-called grunge music appeared in the USA; the founders of this musical direction were American alternative rock bands, many of which began to demonstrate a new musical style back in the 80s. They went out into the world, to their performances, in ordinary, sometimes unkempt, shabby clothes and focused on the music and their worldview.

Over time, grunge moved into other directions, and a whole subculture formed around this concept. In the late 80s, young people increasingly began to appear on the street in torn jeans, T-shirts, sloppy shoes, with strange accessories and disheveled hair, which soon began to be called “grunge hairstyle.”

Deliberate negligence is the main component of haircuts and hairstyles in the grunge style. The same goes for clothes, makeup and even shoes. The most recognizable grunge hairstyles include loose tousled hair, stepped cuts, textured ends, ponytails or buns with strands coming out, messy braids, side ponytails, and so on.

What elements of grunge style exist?

- convenience, practicality;

- lack of the usual shine, chic and gloss;

- multi-layered hairstyles with uneven cuts, sharp lines without smooth transitions;

- texture and volume.

Long hair in a grunge style will gain volume and texture, for example, in a high ponytail, a spikelet or several, styling on one side or a cascade haircut that is easy to style in any way.

For a client with medium-length hair, it is better to choose a bob with or without bangs, an elongated bob or a torn pageboy.

Short hair will be easy to style if you choose an asymmetrical, garcon or pixie haircut for the client - these haircuts are quite classic for this length and are well textured and styled.
