Foundation textures: how should a makeup artist work with them?
Let's figure it out
Makeup artists are required to know everything about textures and methods of applying foundation, because without this product it is hardly possible to create perfect makeup.

Makeup in the professional activity of a makeup artist is not only a number of techniques, knowledge of color and style, but also textures that affect the quality, ease of application and naturalness in the image.
In professional decorative cosmetics, a variety of textures is manifested in everything: in toners, lipsticks, correctors, shadows, etc. And one of the main tasks of a makeup artist is not only to choose them correctly, but also to be able to competently combine these textures between yourself. Such knowledge and skills are developed through experience and mastery of decorative cosmetics.
When choosing the right toner, we always look at its coverage, color and texture. The following textures can be found in tones and corrective products:
- liquid;
- compact (creamy);
- dry.
Liquid tinting products
Liquid toners are divided into tones with moisturizing components and long-lasting tones. The first ones are great for dry, dry and normal skin. The effect of these products is double: both care and decoration at the same time. And the latter are also called mattifying foundation products, since due to the increased content of the powdering component, the tone not only evens out and mattifies the skin, but also remains on its surface for a long time. It is especially suitable for oily, oily and normal skin.
To create the effect of an ideal tone on the face, both tinting agents are mixed in different proportions to achieve an individual and even coverage that will not only perfectly hide skin imperfections, but will also feel comfortable on the skin.
Types of compact foundations
- base primer;
- tone powder;
- camouflage.
The primer base has three functions: it is used as a base for shadows, as an overall complexion and is suitable for creating a “living retouching” effect.
Before using dry compact or loose shadows, you need to apply a thin layer of primer to your eyelids so that the shadows not only last for a long time, but also blend well, and their color rendition is maximum. The shade of the base must be matched to the tone of the skin. If you need to enhance the highlighting of the shadows, it is better to apply a slightly lighter base primer.
As a general tone, the base-primer not only perfectly evens out skin color, but also perfectly fights texture (pimples, uneven terrain, etc.) due to the increased content of reflective particles in it.
If the skin is problematic, the combination of liquid textures and compact ones (base-primer) will create the effect of “living retouching” without the feeling of a mask - real magic for smoothing out such skin. This magical tandem of two textures works wonders not only in makeup for photo shoots, but also in everyday life. The skin looks perfect!
Tone powder - its name speaks for itself. This is both a tone and a powder at the same time. The product has a creamy texture that will provide light leveling and at the same time matting. This product has one feature - it can be applied both dry and wet. Excellent ability to vary application density. If you use the wet method, the tinted coverage will be lighter and more natural and vice versa.
Camouflage is the densest means and is more suitable for local use. Perfectly camouflages cuts, bruises, scars, tattoos. But since the texture of the product is oily and dense, it is advisable to powder the skin after using it for maximum durability.
Dry tonal textures
The most popular dry texture tinting agent is Color cake. Compact powder with a high content of pigments, which allows not only to mattify, but also to even out skin tone. An excellent product for skin with minimal imperfections.
The magic of toners lies in their combination. All tones are compact, creamy and liquid; they can and should be mixed with each other, achieving the ideal texture just for you or your client.
Magic to you in everything!
