Dry scalp type is characterized by a number of features that may not seem obvious at first glance. What inconveniences can this type of skin cause for a specialist and how to care for it? Our resident expert shared the main rules.

Yulia Sedletskaya , rehabilitologist-trichologist of the scalp and hair shaft, developer of procedures for trichological anomalies, leading specialist at Orising, speaker at international congresses, member of the All-Ukrainian Association of Trichologists, member of the RHRS Russian Society for Hair Research, owner of the Sedletskaya studio, work experience - 13 years

Dry scalp type is quite rare among clients. Particular differences of this type of skin are a feeling of tightness, the absence of sebaceous and sweaty secretions on the skin, and sometimes itching and burning. Another unobvious feature of a dry scalp is that it does not flake. This is a common misconception.

The hairdresser often has difficulty choosing a shampoo for this type of scalp. Incorrect selection immediately leads to a response of discomfort in the client. Clients with this type wash their hair very rarely, their hair does not get dirty at all, and they say that they wash their hair “for the sake of decency.”

Specific care for dry skin types

This skin type is not always associated with congenital characteristics. It is constantly necessary to remember and remind clients that our largest organ depends on the state of hormonal levels, the functioning of the gastrointestinal tract, care, as well as drinking regime and nutrition. And, of course, we can improve her condition for the better by adjusting all of the above points, namely:

- drink enough water: calculating 30 ml of water per 1 kg of weight;

- consume vegetable fats from 30 to 70 g per day;

- exclude canned, sweet and smoked foods;

- monitor your hormonal levels, especially after 30 years;

- select shampoos and care products without aggressive surfactants;

What are the inconveniences of working with dry skin?

Inconveniences for the client are discomfort, tightness and the formation of weakened, brittle hair.

The inconvenience for the master is difficulty in working, because the skin is very sensitive to any chemical influences. After coloring, burns may occur, and I’m even afraid to imagine how the client feels during and after the procedure.

The hair that grows on such skin is very difficult to grow; the haircut quickly loses its original shape, so it becomes very thin and brittle. Accordingly, for the master this can complicate many tasks in performing haircuts and even hairstyles.

What restrictions on care are there?

On dry scalp, it is strictly forbidden to carry out the coloring procedure without applying protection, as well as to use deep cleaning shampoos and abrasive peelings.

Care should include moisturizing shampoos with coconut oil, argan oil, chamomile, calendula and soft surfactants. I recommend that clients make moisturizing masks without silicones: apply them directly to the skin after washing, keep under a heat source for 15-20 minutes.

For home care, recommend that clients stock up on leave-in care products with amino acids and proteins, and also massage the scalp and collar area a couple of times a week.
