Despite the fact that beauty salons are allowed to operate in many countries, the ban has not yet been lifted in some states.

The artistic director of Toni & Guy – Cos Sakkas shared his thoughts on the work.

Without a doubt, quarantine has been a testing time for all of us. With uncertainty in many areas of life during coronavirus, it's difficult to know how to use this free time. Cos Sakkas, British Hairdresser of the Year 2020 nominee and international artistic director of Toni & Guy, has been using the lockdown to reflect. This is exactly what he told HJ magazine.

“We've talked to salons and hairdressers all over the world, and it's inspiring, humbling, and relieving,” says Cos. “There is truly no other industry quite like hairdressing and the restrictions of the last few months have forced us all to think twice about who we work with.” We work with great people, surround ourselves with positivity and passion, and always work alongside each other.” Here are five things, according to Cos Sakkas, that quarantine has taught hairdressers.

Five things hairdressers learned while in quarantine

We miss work

The physical act of cutting or coloring hair to transform just the hair on our head into something beautiful, edgy, or feminine. Working with a mannequin is not the same. There's no better feeling than your client's smile when they look at their new self in the mirror.

And during conversations with clients

One-on-one conversations about everyday life, families and careers, their worries and dreams. There's more to your relationship than hair work, and we understand how important that emotional connection is to them and to us.

During quarantine, a community spirit was formed

Social networks have brought the world of hairdressing closer together. We share our experience of being in quarantine and examples of opening salons around the world. We discuss problems and concerns and try to work together to solve them.

Your team is everything

The people you work with and surround yourself with are incredible. From assistants to salon managers, photographers and models, we work with people who are compassionate, funny, caring, loyal and exciting. Zoom meetings are a great idea, but I can't wait for the day when we get together as a team again.

Education is as important as ever

There were tons of online courses ranging from haircut tutorials to demos. It taught us all how important and fun it is to keep your skills sharp and get out of your comfort zone. BUT! Nothing compares to real education, and we are all waiting for the opening of academies where we can work with live models again.
