Everyone knows that smoking is harmful. But, unfortunately, it is very difficult for many people to give up this bad habit on their own. It is important for a specialist in the field of aesthetic medicine to help his patient cope with bad habits by explaining harm to health, in particular to the skin.

The effect of smoking on the body has been studied since the beginning of the 1950s, and in 1964 smoking was linked to an increase in the incidence of cardiovascular disease and respiratory tract. Today, there is more than enough scientific evidence to support the claim that tobacco smoke is toxic at the cellular level, but there are relatively few studies of its effects on the skin. Cigarette smoking has been shown to increase most symptoms associated with the aging process, including skin aging (1). The mechanisms responsible for the effects of smoking on the skin are not fully understood.

The relationship between smoking and skin cancer is not yet clear, and the results of various studies are contradictory (3-6). Some chronic dermatoses, such as contact and atopic dermatitis, psoriasis and cutaneous lupus erythematosus, are associated with cigarette smoking. On the other hand, nicotine has been shown to be effective in treating certain skin conditions (7), and no link has been found between cigarette smoking and acne (8).

Physico-chemical aspects of smoking and tobacco addiction

Nowadays, tobacco addiction is considered as a mental and behavioral disorder due to the use of tobacco (ICL code F17). This disease is chronic and relapsing and requires long-term and systematic medical intervention or abstinence (9).
