Anatomy of the upper and lower eyelids

The skin of the eyelids is the thinnest and most vascularized. The thickness of the skin of the eyelids is less than a millimeter. Unlike other anatomical areas, where fatty tissue is located under the skin, under the skin of the eyelids there is a flat circular muscle of the eye, which is conventionally divided into three parts:

  • internal (located above the cartilage plates of the upper and lower eyelids);
  • median (above the intraorbital fat);
  • external (located above the bones of the orbit and woven into the muscles of the forehead at the top, and at the bottom - into the superficial musculo-fascial system of the face - SMAS).

The main features of young eyelids are a smooth contour stretching from the eyebrow to the upper eyelid and from the lower eyelid to the cheek and the middle area of the face, the skin is taut, the tissues are full. With age, the condition of the eyelids changes - a clear border appears between the eyebrow and the upper eyelid, the lower eyelid and the cheek, the eyes seem empty. In most people, the orbital fissure becomes smaller and (or) rounded with age due to the downward displacement of both the upper and lower eyelids.
